Khruangbin is an American musical trio from Houston, Texas, formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald Ray "DJ" Johnson Jr. on drums. The band is known for blending global music influences, classic soul, dub and psychedelia. Their debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You (2015), draws from the history of Thai music in the 1960s, while their second album, Con Todo El Mundo (2018), also has influences from Spain and the Middle East. The upside to the months spent touring was the wealth of new inspirations to be found on the road. Some ideas were written while touring in places like India, and field recordings were made in Asia, Australia, Morocco, and America. This affinity with worldwide music cultures is also shared by Texan Thai funk trio Khruangbin, with whom Davids and Ivory collaborated on the invigorating single "Feel Good".

"We discovered them about three or four years ago. They became one of our favourite bands for quite a while. The Universe Smiles Upon You is one of the best albums we've heard in recent years, like the sort of album you can just put on and listen to from start to finish. It's quite rare to find an album like that," enthuses Davids. "We got them over to support us at KOKO when we had our first proper big London headline show. During the process of writing the second album, [a collaboration] was always something on the cards that we were trying to make happen. We managed to get it together just in the nick of time. They’re really, really lovely people. And a lot of fun."

Let’s start with the single featuring Khruangbin – how did "Feel Good" come about and what was the impetus for working with them?

We’d been huge fans of Khruangbin ever since we first saw them live at the Ace Hotel in London back in 2015, just before their first album came out. We asked them to support us a few months later at our headline Koko show and built a relationship from there. It ended up blooming through a whole bunch of different writing sessions; sending ideas back and forth whilst they were busy touring in the states. As well as having a few writing sessions in our studio with each of them individually when they got the time off in the UK. We never actually all got together in the same room, which is kind of odd but I think it resulted in the song capturing a lot of different moods and styles from that separation that otherwise may not have melded together as easily had we have all been together.

Khruangbin blends global music, classic soul, dub and psychedelia to concoct their signature sounds, and today Laura Lee (bass), Mark Speer (guitar), and Donald Ray "DJ" Johnson Jr. (drums) stopped by to chat about their influences, their creative process, and close things out with a live performance of their song "August 10."

Waren live super in Frankfurt.

Und das hier - was auch schon in deinem ersten Post war - hat mich früh überzeugt...

Eine Band, die sich live noch besser anhört als auf Platte, wann gibt's sowas schon mal?
