20:00 Ringworm

Live: Ringworm (Clevo-Hardcore/USA), Pulling Teeth (Hardcore/USA), Cruel Eyes (Hardcore/Berlin)

If one was to research the roots of the Metalcore genre, it wouldn’t be long until one would come across Cleveland, Ohio’s Ringworm. With their first release 1993’s The Promise, Ringworm blew away metalheads and hardcore kids around the world with their almost seamless merging of metal and hardcore breakdowns. Their long awaited first release on Victory Records, 2001’s Birth is Pain, did not disappoint either, another classic in the Metalcore genre and an absolutely punishing album from start to finish. In 2005, Ringworm released their second Victory Records offering, the critically acclaimed Justice Replaced by Revenge. This record delivered from start to finish as well, making countless Best of Lists for 2005 and earned Ringworm the national attention and respect they deserve. In 2007 the band released The Venomous Grand Design and Ringworm is back and as hard if not harder and more brutal than ever. From the first chord on the second track (first track is an intro) to the last second of track 13, it is simply awesome. It’s better than anything they’ve ever released, period. In fact, The Venomous Grand Design is what metalcore should be. In my opinion this is one of the two definitive metalcore albums (the other being “The Oncoming Storm” by Unearth). From the blistering guitar solos to the violence inciting breakdowns to front man Human Furnace’s nasal, gargle-filled, barking, this album is as closet o perfect as they come. This is the album where all of the hard work that these guys have put in over the years shines; fast paced, in your face, kick your ass up and down the block metal and hardcore. This album is bursting with intensity and has the vigor and power of an offering from Napalm Death in their prime. Songs like “Suicidal Visions” and “The Cage” are perfect examples of the sheer brutality of this album. –
