It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we have to announce the passing of Gino Mäder. On Friday 16th June, following a very serious crash during stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse, Gino lost his battle to recover from the severe injuries he sustained. Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

Following the high-speed incident which occurred on the final descent of Thursday’s stage, the 26 year old was resuscitated at the scene by medical staff who also performed CPR, before being airlifted to hospital.

Despite the best efforts of the phenomenal staff at Chur hospital, Gino couldn’t make it through this, his final and biggest challenge, and at 11:30am we said goodbye to one of the shining lights of our team.

Gino was an extraordinary athlete, an example of determination, a valued member of our team and the whole cycling community. His talent, dedication, and passion for the sport has inspired us all.

Managing Director Milan Erzen commented this morning:” “We are devastated by the loss of our exceptional cyclist, Gino Mäder. His talent, dedication, and enthusiasm were an inspiration to us all. Not only was he an extremely talented cyclist, but a great person off the bike. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. Bahrain Victorious will race in his honour, keeping his memory on every road we race. We are determined to show the spirit and passion Gino displayed, and he will always remain an integral part of our team.”

Gino’s family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss, and we kindly ask that their wishes be respected. The team and family express our gratitude for the overwhelming support we have received from the whole cycling world.

Gino, thank you for the light, the joy, and the laughs you brought us all, we will miss you as a rider and as a person.

Heute festgestellt, wie sehr mich das noch mitnimmt - wollte die Tour-Doku auf Netflix starten und komme gar nicht klar auf die dort natürlich zur Schau gestellte Glorifizierung der Gefahr. Allein wie oft in der Auftaktfolge Jakobsens Crash in Polen gezeigt wird...

Voller Fokus auf Glasgow morgen, der erste Radsport-Feiertag nach der Tour!​

Edinburgh-Glasgow: Die Strecke

Rund 270 Kilometer, mehr als 3600 Höhenmeter – lang, schwer, das Finale auf einem Stadtkurs – das Straßenrennen in Glasgow hat einen typischen WM-Parcours. Rennen mit Nationalmannschaften und ohne Funk sind selten, taktisch speziell und haben eigene Gesetze. Der Stadtkurs in Glasgow ist knifflig, mit vielen kurzen Anstiegen. Zudem ist das glatte Kopfsteinpflaster in einem Abschnitt nicht ohne Tücken – regnet es, kann es gefährlich werden.

Aus deutscher Sicht interessant: bei Bora neben Emu Buchmann auch Nico Denz sowie Lennard Kämna dabei, die beide schon beim Giro für Furore zu sorgen wussten (Denz zwei Etappensiege, Kämna Gesamt-Neunter). Mit Aleksandr Vlasov, Sergio Higuita sowie Youngster Cian Ujitdebroeks zudem gleich drei weitere mögliche GC Contender im Kader.

Los geht's heute Abend in Barcelona mit einem Teamzeitfahren - eine Disziplin, die wir im modernen Radsport leider viel zu selten erleben, bringt sie neben der für einzelne Fahrer sportlich riesigen Herausforderung doch v.a. in ästhetischer Hinsicht eindrucksvolle Bilder mit sich.
 
Sowas wie heute in Barcelona habe ich auch noch nie gesehen. Lol die letzten Teams kommen im Dunklen ins Ziel. Ich mag die manchmal verrückte Streckenplanung bei der Vuelta, aber das heute ist kräftig in die Hose gegangen.

Remco auch mächtig angefressen und mit deutlicher Kritik am Veranstalter - v.a. die späte Startzeit betreffend und dass man trotz bekannter Wettervorhersage an selbiger festgehalten hat.

Cian Uijtdebroeks aktuell tatsächlich Boras Bestplatzierter! Vergangenes Jahr Sieger der prestigeträchtigen Tour de l'Avenir, nun dieser formidable Start in seine erste Vuelta...könnte da neben Remco bald ein weiterer Belgier bei den großen Landesrundfahrten vorne mitmischen? Ich jedenfalls habe Cian schonmal vorsorglich in die Liste meiner Lieblingsfahrer mit aufgenommen.

Unterdessen Lenny Martinez seit gestern sensationeller Spitzenreiter der Vuelta! Frankreich wartet bekanntlich seit Jahrzehnten auf einen heimischen Toursieger, auch die aktuelle Generation um Thibaut Pinot und Romain Bardet konnte die ganz große Erwartung nie erfüllen - was wird da nun für eine Hoffnung aufkeimen...zumal man Lennys Familie durchaus kennt, haben doch bereits Vater Miguel sowie Großvater Mariano an der Grand Boucle teilgenommen.
